Move Analysis of Thesis and Dissertation Abstracts in One Philippine Graduate Institute

In the Philippines, move-analytic investigations have been carried out. However, none of these attempted to look into genre thesis and dissertation abstracts. Cognizant this gap, study examined a corpus 100 research abstracts written by Filipino graduate students in one private university Western Metro Manila. order identify moves, rhetorical organization, linguistic features, deviations corpus, mixed-method design was employed. Analyses data reveal that all moves Hyland’s model are present corpus. Such linguistically realized through use tense, perfect attitudinal stance words, deictic item+ inquiry type noun+ reporting verb formulaic pattern, past-passive constructions, opening subject+ verb+ that-complement clause modals, nominal phrases. As non-linear organization is most preferred, while linear least. With respect deviations, word count, format, level usage, syntactic structure, mechanics, grammar, lexis uncovered.
